CEO’s Blog – Student Voice (24th February 2023)

CEO's Blog - Student Voice (24th February 2023)   A few weeks ago, before the half term break, I said I would be reporting on how we listen to the Student Voice across our MAT and wider Group. Well, this week, I'm able to do just that, as some of our schools and...

Graham

It’s been another week of invitational meetings.

This week we have had updates from Spring Brook Lower, Spring Brook Upper and Springboard Project.

What a joy it has been.

Let’s start with Spring Brook Lower.  Toni and the team gave us an update with regards to the wonderful reading programme that has not only continued through the pandemic, but has accelerated through the extended use of our virtual platform.  It was absolutely inspirational to hear of the teaching strategies that have been utilised to unlock the potential of the children.  I believe that the ability to accurately read and understand text massively empowers our Spring Brook children and young people.  What was truly remarkable was our families’ feedback in relation to the progress the children are making.  The 1:1 project and our iPads seem to making a massive difference.  I know the team from Apple UK are very, very interested in the impact we have made.

Spring Brook Upper had an equally positive story to tell.  It revolved around the relationships the staff in school have had with our children and families over the last 9/12 months.  What made the presentation at the Upper site even more powerful, was that we viewed a piece of film created, filmed and edited by a parent.  It told us of the challenges of lockdown in a really honest and open way and it also showed some actual examples of how the staff at the school had supported in a virtual, practicable and actual manner.  Again, it was wonderful to see how our staff team have been more than prepared to go over and above for our children.

Springboard Project presented on Thursday and, not to be outdone, they offered a view on some of their future plans.  They are quite magnificent.  What was highlighted to me was the way each young person was treated as an individual and placed at the very centre of the developments.  Alison, Mike and Lee were able to clearly articulate a coherent and exciting plan that involves using our present systems and process, engaging with our community partners, and exploring different vocational opportunities.  They were really clear that the offer has to lead to a discernible outcome.  The young people need to see the reason behind the learning pathway.  They need to understand that they will draw down a wage in the future.  It’s going to be so exciting to be part this journey.

“Touch wood”, we appear to have had a great “return to school”.  Most of our children and young people have returned to school.  Thank you for your support with the lateral flow testing.  Let’s try and ensure that we keep everyone safe for a few more weeks.

Stay safe,

Graham
